What Are Extra Magic Hours?

Planning for Disney can be overwhelming and the details can all start to run together. Sometimes even the simplest questions seem so complex, so through different posts I hope to help you sort through some of the craziness and feel better prepared for your trip.

What are Extra Magic Hours?

Extra Magic Hours, or EMH, are additional hours that parks are open each day to enjoy before it is open to the public. Which park has Extra Magic Hours varies from day to day and whether the Extra Magic Hours are in the morning or late in the evening varies as well. Each day of the week you will find a different park offering the extra magic hours. Each week you will find that one park will have a morning set of Extra Magic Hours and one will have evening Extra Magic Hours.

Where can I find which park has Extra Magic Hours?

There are a few different places you can check to see which park(s) have extra magic hours.

  1. The My Disney Experience App – You can access park hours through the app on your mobile device (or on a computer through your account).
  2. Disney Parks Calendars – The park hours and special events can be found on this website – https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/calendars/
  3. Park Times Guides – Available at the front desk of every resort and available at the parks themselves

Who can benefit from Extra Magic Hours?

Extra Magic Hours are only available to those parks guests that are staying in a Walt Disney World Resort. There is no extra cost to use Extra Magic Hours.

Extra Magic Hours are a great way to get additional time at the parks if you plan your park visits based on which park has Extra Magic Hours.

All Star Sports Review

I have stayed at the All-Star Sports Resort more times than I have fingers on one hand. For me, the hotel is normally about making sure I have somewhere to sleep, shower, and keep my clothes and not necessarily somewhere I am going to spend a significant amount of time. When I stay at the All-Star Sports resort I’m normally put my money towards other Disney experiences (like a race or a behind the scenes tour) so the resort isn’t as important.

General Information

The All-Star Sports Resort and its sister hotels the All-Star Movies and All-Star Music are all located in the same area and are considered Animal Kingdom area hotels.  They are value resorts, providing you with fewer amenities, but also are a bit easier on the wallet.

The All-Star Resorts offer rooms with two double beds and a single bathroom. Like other hotels they do have a refrigerator. Each hotel follows a specific theme (sports, movies. music) and they are sectioned for different aspects of that them. The All-Star Sports Resort has basketball, baseball, football, surfing, and tennis. The main pool, Surfboard Bay Pool, is located closest to the main building/food court and then a smaller pool located in the baseball themed area.

Positives

The All-Star Sports Resort is the first hotel in the line. If you are visiting a park that shares a bus between the All-Star hotels, then the All-Star Sports is the first to be picked up and the first to be dropped off.  This doesn’t happen as often anymore as they have increased buses during peak times, but it does still happen on occasion.

Sports - Sign

The park bus stop at All Star Sports.

The All-Star Sorts Resort is very reasonably priced and allows guests to have the Disney experience and all of the benefits of on-property lodging, without having to pay a significant cost. Even though you may pay the same as you might at a Holiday Inn or Hampton Inn ($89-$109 per night) you still get to take advantage of free Disney transportation.

Sports - Baseball theming

Themes at All Star Sports include baseball, basketball, football, surfing, and tennis

The Food Court at the All-Star Sports is pretty decent for food court cooking. When I eat at the All-Star Sports food court I am not expecting five-star food. There are a variety of options including pizza, pasta, hamburgers, hot dogs, roast beef, and salads.  Additionally, you can choose a variety of baked goods and frozen desserts. The layout of the food court is decent and allows for a large number of guests to both access the food options and the cash registers. There is also a delivery option to the rooms for full pizzas and a bar that is accessible from the food court and from the main pool with a variety of alcoholic beverages.

Another positive with staying at the All-Star Sports is the proximity to the ESPN Wide World of Sports facility. If you are traveling to Walt Disney World for an event with activities at the Wide World of Sports Facility, it is only about a five-minute bus ride to the complex.

Areas for Improvement

While close to the ESPN complex and Animal Kingdom, it is no less than a 20-minute bus ride to all of the other Disney parks and Disney Springs. This means that you need to allow for travel time when planning your departure for the parks. Be prepared for that longer duration on the ride back to the resort at the end of the day as well. And, buses are the only Disney transportation to and from your resort.

The two double beds is definitely are area for improvement, but with the recent update to Pop Century there is some rumor that the All Star Resorts may get upgraded to two queens also. When you are used to sleeping on a queen bed, sharing a double bed with someone can become very cramped and lead to less than quality sleep. If we have more than two adults in a room at the All-Star Resort we either accept that we won’t sleep as well or we bring an inflatable mattress for extra sleeping space.

While I listed the proximity to the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex as a positive, it also can be something to keep in mind as a potential reason to NOT book the All-Star Resorts. These resorts are often used by groups that are participating in events at the complex, including youth sporting events. The guests at the All-Star Resorts tend to be younger (especially when there are competitions at the ESPN complex) and these guests can be found outside the buildings early in the morning or late at night practicing or leaving for their events early.

When choosing a resort, make sure you know what you want from your resort stay. If you want that Disney experience with Disney benefits for a lower price, than the value resorts are your best choice and the All-Star Sports Resort is a great option.
